Wadi Zin Most people think of the Negev as a dry, desolate desert. That image quickly fades if you happen to cross Wadi Zin in the winter. Suddenly a wall of water resulting from the rain and melting snows of the Negev highlands will come crashing down the usually dry gully of the River Zin! Wadi Zin embodies all that is splendid and unique in the Negev. It originates in the region of Machtesh Ramon (the largest of the Negev "craters"). Wadi Zin hosts abundant types of flora and fauna, among them the ibex that have become symbolic of modern efforts to preserve the region's wildlife. The late Prime Minister David Ben Gurion and his wife Paula made their home at Kibbutz Sde Boker located above Wadi Zin. It is certainly no accident that they chose to be buried on a cliff that overlooks the spectacular wadi. Visitors who come to the tombs to honor Israel’s unique national leader are offered an extra bonus: an incredible view of Wadi Zin. |
